The Playground

Jane Shemilt

Over the course of a long, hot summer in London, the lives of three very different married couples collide when their children join the same tutoring circle, resulting in illicit relationships, shocking violence, and unimaginable fallout. There's Eve, a bougie earth mother with a well-stocked trust fund; she has three little ones, a blue-collar husband and is obsessed with her Instagrammable recipes and lifestyle. And Melissa, a successful interior designer whose casually cruel banker husband is careful not to leave visible bruises; she curates her perfectly thin body so closely she misses everything their teenage daughter is hiding. Then there's Grace, a young Zimbabwean immigrant, who lives in high-rise housing project with her two children and their English father Martin, an award-winning but chronically broke novelist; she does far more for her family than she should have to. As the weeks go by, the couples become very close; there are barbecues, garden parties, a holiday at a country villa in Greece. Resentments flare. An affair begins. Unnoticed, the children run wild. The couples are busily watching each other, so distracted and self-absorbed that they forget to watch their children. No one sees the five children at their secret games or realize how much their family dynamics are changing until tragedy strikes. The story twists and then twists again while the three families desperately search for answers. It's only as they begin to unravel the truth of what happened over the summer that they realize evil has crept quietly into their world. But has this knowledge come too late?

The Dead Girl's Club

Angelica Walters

Red Lady, Red Lady, show us your face. In 1991, Heather Cole and her friends were members of the Dead Girls Club. Obsessed with the macabre, the girls exchanged stories about serial killers and imaginary monsters, like the Red Lady, the spirit of a vengeful witch killed centuries before. Heather knew the stories were just that, until her best friend Becca began insisting the Red Lady was real--and she could prove it. That belief got Becca killed. It's been nearly thirty years, but Heather has never told anyone what really happened that night--that Becca was right and the Red Lady was real. She's done her best to put that fateful summer, Becca, and the Red Lady, behind her. Until a familiar necklace arrives in the mail, a necklace Heather hasn't seen since the night Becca died. The night Heather killed her. Now, someone else knows what she did and they're determined to make Heather pay.

Jayne Ann Rentz

Decades ago in the small town of Fogg Lake, "The Incident" occurred: an explosion in the cave system that released unknown gases. The residents slept for two days. When they woke up they discovered that things had changed-they had changed. Some started having visions. Others heard ominous voices. And then the scientists from a mysterious government agency arrived. Determined not to become research subjects of strange experiments, the residents of Fogg Lake blamed the "hallucinations" on food poisoning, and the story worked. But now it has become apparent that the eerie effects of The Incident are showing up in the descendants of Fogg Lake... Catalina Lark and Olivia LeClair, best friends and co-owners of an investigation firm in Seattle, use what they call their "other sight" to help solve cases. In such a heightened environment, even the smallest spark can become a raging fire. One day after the school&;s annual Halloween event, a student lies in the hospital, her system poisoned by dangerous levels of alcohol. Everyone in this sheltered community&;parents, teachers, students, police, and the media&;are left trying to figure out what actually happened. Only the handful of students who were there when she was attacked truly know the answers and they have vowed to keep one another&;s secrets. As details from the evening emerge, powerful families are forced to hire attorneys and less powerful families watch helplessly. Parents&; marriages are jeopardized, and students&; futures are impacted. No one at Saint Ambrose can escape the fallout of a life-altering event. In this compelling novel, Danielle Steel illuminates the dark side of one drunken night, with its tragic consequences, from every possible point of view. Close to Home

Andrew Grant

As an intelligence agent-turned-courthouse janitor, Paul McGrath notices everything and everyone--but no one notices him. It's the perfect cover for the justice he seeks for both his father and the people who've been wronged by a corrupt system. Now McGrath has discovered a missing file on Alex Pardew--the man who defrauded and likely murdered his father but avoided conviction, thanks in large part to the loss of this very file. And what lies behind its disappearance is even worse than McGrath had feared. Meanwhile, at the courthouse, McGrath stumbles onto the case of Len Hendrie, a small businessman who's been accused of torching a venture capitalist's mansion in Westchester. Hendrie admits to starting the fire, but then McGrath learns how the investor has preyed on average Joes to benefit himself--and his extensive wine collection. McGrath can't resist looking deeper into this financial predator, and he soon finds himself in a grey area between his avenging moral compass and the limits of the law. Then, just as the Hendrie case is heating up, McGrath receives word of the death of his father's former housekeeper, sending him back to his family home to confront unfinished business from his past. And he's about to find some unwelcome truths about the mother he lost as a child--and the father who hid even more secrets than he realized.

Potions for Pushovers

Tamara Berry

But now that she's established herself as the town witch, Ellie's contentedly casting spells on anyone desperate enough--or gullible enough--to request her mysterious potions... Selling mystical elixirs and tantalizing tonics is a pretty good way for a fake medium to earn a living. Or at least it's Ellie's main source of income--until a villager turns up dead. The cause? Murder by poisoning. And though Ellie's concoctions don't include anything worthy of a skull and crossbones, suddenly she's the prime suspect. Her only recourse is to find the culprit who did do away with Sarah Blackthorne. No one liked the mean old battle-axe. But did anyone hate her enough to kill her? It's enough of a mystery to make Ellie hang up her witch's hat and take millionaire beau Nicholas Hartford up on his offer to keep her afloat. Except Ellie is not the kind of woman to lean on a man--least of all a man she adores but whose place in her life is uncertain. Besides, Ellie's taken on two young witches-in-training--apprentices if you will--and both of them are convinced a werewolf is the murderer. Just as Ellie's wondering if there really is something otherworldly going on, animals suddenly begin to disappear--including her beloved cat, Beast. Now Ellie's on the warpath to uncover the wicked truth about the people and the place she's only just begun to call home...

Only Love

Melanie Harlow

Ryan is the sexiest man I've ever met--I mean the full package, from the chiseled jaw to the massive shoulders to the rippling abs. He also makes me want to take my clothes off. A lot. But he's moody and challenging--one minute he's an open book, and the next he's completely closed off. He holds me like he'll never let go, but insists he wants to be alone. Some wounds are so deep, only love can heal them. How can I convince him to let me try?
